Christmas Houses

My kids always think they want to decorate gingerbread houses but it is always too complicated for us so when I saw this kit using rice crispy treats, I thought it would be perfect. It didn't actually turn out as great as I thought because there was not enough marshmallow stuff for the rice crispies but they were fun and easy to decorate. I still have the mold for the house so we can do it again another time with my own recipe.

Nyah's Birthday

Nyah had her 3rd birthday. I think this is the first year she anticipated her birthday coming. She has loved Tangled so I put Rapunzel and Flynn on her cake. I think she would have loved a cake shaped like the doll but I have learned I have major limitations when it comes to cake decorations so I opted for a much easier design. And now she has a doll to play with. She said she wouldn't turn 3 until she blew her candles out. I thought that was funny. We went to the Hyrum ambulance house for cake and ice cream because Dad got to work all day.

A couple of years ago, I made "spooky" things for dinner and my kids thought that it was such fun they have made me continue the tradition. This year we had kidneys with chopped fingers, chopped brain salad, congealed blood, witches brew, and bloodshot eyeballs.

Tangled's Rapunzel/Nyah

Nyah has been loving the movie Tangled so we dressed her up as Rapunzel this year. I made the braid out of a whole skein of yarn. She won the "longest hair" award along with another Rapunzel at the ward party. She is pretty cute dancing around with her long hair. I wasn't sure how long it needed to be so it actually did drag a bit. While trick or treating, I held the end of it like she was a dog on a leash.

Captain Jack Sparrow/Dallin

Lotoja 2011

We helped the amateur radio club with Lotoja again this year but this year was quite a bit different. We went over to Montpelier Friday night and set up a bunch of radio and internet stuff at the park on Saturday morning. We were able to track the other radio people with APRS so we could follow the race. We also acted as a dispatch center and linked the other areas together. After all of the racers had gone through Montpelier we followed the tail end of the race in to Jackson. It was well after dark when we got done. That made for a really long day. The next day we got up early and headed back home so we could get the kids out of JaNae's hair so she could get to church.

Couch to 5K

Some of the girls in our neighborhood started a "Couch to 5K" Running Club at the end of the summer. Melissa was invited to join them. She was the youngest girl that stuck with it. I also decided that I would follow the training schedule too. Today was the day to get all together and run a 5K (that is 3.1 miles). Melissa and I were dead last and our running time was 42 minutes, 18 seconds. I am sure that that is a pretty pathetic time but considering that 9 weeks ago we weren't running at all, I am pretty impressed with us. We did do some walking, especially in the middle, Melissa was having trouble breathing but I am so proud of her for staying with it.

First day of school

School has been going for a little over a month now. Melissa is in 4th grade and Dallin is in 2nd grade. They both seem to be doing well and enjoying it.

Road Trips

We have been on a couple of fun local road trips in the last few weeks. First of all, we went up Blacksmith Fork Canyon, past Hardware Ranch, through some mountains heading north and ended up in Laketown. Who knew that was even possible?

Our other trip was out to the north end of the Great Salt Lake. We weren't actually able to get to the lake it was too far out but we did walk on the beach, see a beautiful sunset, and enjoyed a nice breeze. We were also able to see where ATK (Thiokol) is and see their rocket display from the road. We also drove through the bird refuge by taking a wrong turn but it is all in the fun of it.

These maps are from APRS the tracking device we have in the Explorer. It is fun to see exactly where we have gone.

On July 12, I heard on the news that they were putting the Angel Moroni statue on top of the Brigham City temple. I thought that would be a cool field trip for the kids and me as well. I packed us up a picnic lunch and we headed over the hill. On the way over it started to rain and I was grateful that at the last minute I had decided to grab umbrellas. Once we got there we found a pretty good place to stand on the northwest corner in a dentist office parking lot. It was still raining and raining quite hard. We could see the statue on the ground hooked to a crane. Around noon, (the time it was supposed to be lifted) it stopped raining but it was still breezy. We stood around for about 45 minutes, then they unhooked the statue from the crane and people started to disperse. We went back to the van and ate lunch then I drove around and could not tell that anything was going on so I decided to head home. We got home and went to the library. At the library we got interviewed by a Herald Journal reporter about the summer reading program. Also while at the library, my sister Sheila called me and said she had seen that they were putting up the statue. So I decided to take the kids back. Unfortunately, we missed the angel being lifted up but there were still guys up working to secure it when we got there. I wish we would have stayed and saw it but it certainly is a memorable day never the less. Now, hopefully we have better luck when it comes time for the open house. It is a very beautiful temple on the outside.

Peas, peas, and more peas!!

Monday morning I picked peas, and then shelled and shelled peas. I ended up with 10 pints to freeze. Other years, my peas have not done very well so I planted more than usual this year and they sure have done well this year. I am sure that will be the most I get in one picking because some of them should have been picked while I was playing at the reunion.

Dorin Porter Family Reunion

We had a Porter Family Reunion July 7-9. Despite some rain and wet clothes and tent we had a good time. We "camped" in Nonavee's pasture, which is pretty good camping with kids. We had access to bathrooms and kitchen which was wonderful. They also had many activities to do: 4-wheeler barrel train rides, horse rides, pony cart rides, a bounce house, etc. Also the place we used at Glendale Reservoir was wonderful with shade, tables, sandpile, and a walkway and dock down to the water. I didn't get many pictures because I had my hands full without a husband around. He had to work :( but we had fun. Thanks Nonavee and family for a great reunion.

There is nothing as constant as change. My kids get to find that out early in life. One of Dallin's good buddies that has lived right across the street for at least 3 years is moving away this summer. They are the same age and have spent many hours together playing. They are both "gamers", plus they have done many other "boy" things together. We will miss you Colby!!

Softball

Melissa played softball on a local girl's team. She had never played before. I think she learned some things and definetely enjoyed being on a team and being with other girls. It was fun to go hang out at the field and watch them play.

Gardening

I actually quite enjoy gardening. I like watching the plants sprout and grow. I like feeling the dirt and running it through my fingers. I actually prefer to weed sans gloves so I can really get the feel of it. I like going out and caring for it in the early morning or evening. (It is too hot in the middle of the day.) This year we doubled the size of our garden. And despite lots of rain this spring we actually got things in quite timely.

Birthday for Dallin

Dallin's birthday was on June 26. He said he didn't feel any different being 7. He did get his first wiggly tooth the day before his birthday. He wanted a Little Big Planet birthday cake. (It is a video game.) I made a green cake and a blue cake and slightly stirred the batter, cooked my round bowl full of cake twice, stuck them together and cut off the brown edges and wa laa, I had a cake that somewhat resembled a planet. I also made a sack person (the character from the game) out of an old sweater. His real present was a bike, he was in much need of a larger one.

End of an Era in Space

It been an exciting, yet a sad day. Today was the start of the final flight in the space transportation system (STS) program using shuttles. STS-1 launched Columbia into space on April 14, 1981. I watched as an excited 3rd grader on the floor of Emerson Elementary's gym floor. It was an exciting time, because the USA through NASA was returning men to space after a 10 year hiatus. The last mission in space by the US at that point took place a couple of months after I was born. It was Apollo 17 and it was our last trip to the moon.

Today marks the start of the end of reusable shuttles. Over 30 years of flight. Many millions of miles have been flown by those six orbiters: Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour. Here are a few of the hightlights of the program:

I remember when the Challenger exploded. I was in middle school at the time. I remember watching the repeats as the played the launch over and over again. I watched and felt Atlantis launch while sitting outside my apartment in Ocala, Florida the day my trainer was leaving for a new area. I also remember when Columbia disintegrated during re-entry. Some of my firefighter brothers went to Texas to search for parts in the desert. I have close friends who have worked on the booster rockets at ATK or work for ATK Fire. And I will remember the final launch. I watched it from my office on my iPhone.

I am excited about the things the program was able to accomplish and am excited about what NASA and the private sector will accomplish in the future. My current job has strong ties to America's space program. Our equipment is used to measure a lot of data at the Cape and well as monitor the weather for all the launch programs. I have been a big fan of America's space program and am now excited to help play a small part in its continuance.

So here's to a job well done STS. God speed Atlantis.

There was one day this week that it didn't rain and it was a little warm (No, I am sure it was not 90 degrees in the shade) so the kids got out their water stuff, a few friends showed up and an impromptu water party was the result. Oh, to be a kid.

The Sword in the Stone

Each year as part of Nibley City Heritage Days, the children perform a play. They only practice for two weeks and it involves a lot of volunteer time on the part of others as well. I helped make petticoats for the Maypole Dancers. This year they did The Sword in the Stone. They have main speaking parts and then the majority of the children are broken down in age groups and do a little song and dance routine. Dallin was a little fish and Melissa was a butterfly. I will post some still pictures on this post and then see if I can post their videos separately. Thursday night they had to perform in the church because we were having a wind and rain storm. Friday night they were able to be outside in the ampitheater.

Cinderella at the Park

Dallin has turned in to quite the reader this year. He has mostly been reading The Magic Treehouse series. They do Scholastic Reading Counts at their school and earn certificates at different levels. Dallin reached 250 points and will be able to go to breakfast next Tuesday. Also since Dallin was the first person in his class to reach 250 points, his teacher gave him balloons and a gift certificate for The Book Table.

Had a fun day on the radio today. I worked the opening on 10 meters and worked a lot of the East coast and South America. Was able to work stations in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Canada, and Venezuela. Plus I was able to work Georgia, California, Pensylvania, Oregon, and Arizona. Fun day. Even got the Den/Shack cleaned up (with Marci's help of course).

I brought home two little Heritage Husky pups today. Actually it is the kids reading awards. Since their mascot is a husky, their awards are going to coincide with a sled dog team with an Iditarod Champion as the final award. This is the first month they have done it this year because they just got the Scholastic Reading Counts program up and running since they are in a new school.

We had our ward Christmas party last week. The Primary sang The Nativity Song while some kids dressed as the parts came out on the stage. Dallin was a wiseman. Santa also came but Nyah was not having anything to do with "Ho Ho". In fact, she didn't even want to be in the gym with him up on the stage.

Nyah turned 2 years old today. I really can't believe it has been 2 years already. She has really loved Elmo the last few months so she got an Elmo cooking set, Elmo crayons, and Elmo coloring book. I put a little Elmo figurine on her cake and put a 2 on her cake with M&Ms. She really didn't know what it meant to have a birthday and didn't know about blowing out candles but hopefully she has had a good day.

The kids got an early Christmas present this week because they were going to be getting these pajamas but Dallin was having a pajama day at school and was very undecided about what he would wear. I thought it might make it more exciting to have a new pair. He was so excited when they got them and posed for pictures and everything but the next morning when it was time to go to school he was very nervous about wearing pjs to school. He made me walk in to his class with him to make sure other kids were wearing them before he would let me leave.

We purchased the Toy Story 3 video when it came out a few weeks ago. Since then Nyah has watched it several (millions) of times. Each time Buzz does is little Mexican dance in the video, Nyah dances along with him. This is something she started on her own without our coaching.

As usual the kids had fun thinking up their costumes for Halloween. Melissa wanted a full fledged photo shoot so I did take several pictures of them. I will try to post an album on Facebook if I can figure it out. I have never done it before. Melissa was Hermione Granger or Ginny Weasley from Harry Potter. (She couldn't decide which one she wanted to be more.) Dallin was a Denver Bronco football player, and Nyah was a ballerina.

It definetely feels like a change in the weather this weekend. We have had such nice weather up until now. The kids have ridden their bikes every day to school. They have played outside in the afternoon and evening. But now we have pulled up the tomato plants, dug the potatoes, rolled up the hoses and put the sprinklers away. I always feel a forboding as winter approaches. As it gets dark earlier and earlier, I almost feel claustrophobic. I like to have the blinds open and look out my windows and when it is dark outside, I just can't see anything out there. Not to mention the cold, the snow, and the fog. So here is looking forward to Spring!

Jackson Hole Condo

We stayed at a very high end condo at Jackson after the bike race Saturday night. It was a 4 bedroom, 5 bath house, up on the mountain with an amazing view of the Tetons. We shared it with 3 other couples but were not crowded. I took a few pictures to see how the other half lives.

LOTOJA 2010

Travis and I did radio support for the LOTOJA bike race again this year. We haven't done it since 2007. This was my 4th time and his 14th. We did help with a couple of flat tires and then our most exciting part was helping with a lady that crashed. She was unconscious for a little bit before we got there and she had repetitive questions and did not remember the event so we sent her on a little ambulance ride.

Apples

So our reason for going to Cub River was to pick some transparent apples. I had Melissa take a picture of her 80 year old Grandma climbing a ladder. She didn't actually climb the tree in my presence but I think that was because there were no apples in the middle of the tree, they were all on the outside. Anyway, I ended up doing 21 quarts of applesauce by myself and then the next day, Nonavee helped me cut some, she filled my dehydrator and helped me with 6 quarts of apple pie filling. Then she took the rest of the box to work with at her house because I was out of apple time.

I took several pictures of the first day of school trying to get a good picture but I didn't really succeed but I am going to post several of them to really show the personality of my kids.

They started in a brand new school this year. We have had fun this summer watching it be built. It is really close to our home and the kids can zip there pretty quickly on their bikes.

Yellowstone/Island Park

In the middle of August we were able to go on a family vacation to Yellowstone and Island Park. We stayed in a cabin in Island Park and saw some of the sites there and also spent a couple of days seeing the sites in Yellowstone. It rained on us one day in Yellowstone and was COLD. I don't know if the weather had to do with it but we did not see a lot of wildlife. These are some pictures the kids took with my camera. Dad was the official photographer but I don't have those pictures on my computer.

Melissa's Baptism II

I didn't have this picture when I posted about Melissa's baptism but I did want to post it. I don't know how this "Mormon tradition" got started but a lot of the little girls we have seen baptized have a white dress that they wear for confirmation and the next day when they are presented in Sacrament Meeting. I tried to talk Melissa out of it but she still wanted one so I got the hairbrained idea to make her one and use my wedding dress for the fabric. With some help from Mother to get it cut out and Nonavee to put in the zipper, I did it. JaNae helped with finding the cute hairpiece.

I am very proud of Melissa and her desire to be baptized and follow Jesus Christ.

So I got my hair cut yesterday and when I looked in the mirror I thought I looked like Lynette but my kids said I looked like Ryker's Grandma (Nonavee). So I am wondering who do you think I look like?

Melissa's birthday party

I haven't been big on "friend"birthday parties but I did tell my kids they could have one when they turned 8. Melissa has been counting on this for a long time so I hope it met her expectations. We had it on Saturday and 8 of her friends came. Melissa mostly designed and decorated the cake herself. I think she did a good job.

Their last home located in Paris, Idaho across the street from the old Emerson Elementary (now the Paris Fire Station and a Zions Bank)

Next to Uncle Dean is the youngest in the family, Uncle Worth and his wife Aunt Nina, Grandma Nina Louise Passey Eborn and Grandpa Arthur Phipp Eborn are in the front and center of the picture. Next to Grandpa Eborn is Uncle Harlan (Travis' great-grandfather) and his wife, Aunt Agnes (Travis' great-grandmother), is just behind him. Next to Harlan, is Aunt Opal, who recently died just ten days short of her 99th birthday and Uncle Hugh Shephed directly behind her. Next ot Aunt Opal is Aunt Velda Michaelson. Her husband, Alton, was apparently missing from this photograph. Directly behind Aunt Velda is Aunt Elizabeth (Lizzie)Eborn. She was married to Uncle Virgil Eborn, who is also missing from this photograph. On the far right are Aunt Golda and Uncle Clifford Skinner. This large family was fortunate enough to live relatively close to one another in the Bear Lake Valley for most of their lives."

Reading Counts

Melissa has been improving greatly on her reading this year. Her dad told her when she got to 100 points on her Scholastic Reading Counts quizzes she could get her ears pierced. This post is actually late but she did achieve it at the end of March and HAD to go get them done as soon as she got home from school.

I have a fence

I am so excited!!! We got a fence put in that encloses all of the back yard. It will be so nice to have a place for Nyah to play without going in the street plus I think I will just like having some more privacy.

A blessing or a curse?

I really haven't decided whether binkies are good or bad. I like to be able to give a baby something to help soothe them and keep them quiet. All of my kids have been binkie babies but Nyah is the worst. I was able to keep track of one binkie for each of my big kids but Nyah has been through 7. I don't know what the deal is. She has always had to have one in her hands while she is nursing and sometimes she has had one in her mouth and one in each hand. And the problem lately is that I really can't keep track of it, I find it in drawers, cupboards, under beds, in Dad's shoes in the garage, all kinds of places. I wish she was ready to give it up but I just really don't think she is nor that I could handle her without it.

St George

We also stopped in St George and went to a fun park. We had fun miniature golfing and playing arcade games

We went to the temple grounds and tried to get some pictures there but the sun was going down so we didn't get too good of pictures.

"Touching the rock"

Dallin wanted to get up close and personal with a rock so we stopped at this rock on BLM land near Kanab and let him climb it a bit.

Another cool thing we saw with no pictures was The Coral Pink Sand Dunes. Again because it was cold we did not really get to enjoy it as we could have if it had been warm.

Zion's National Park

We rode the shuttle on the scenic road in Zion's. It is the only way they allow visitors there to decrease the wear and tear on the park. It was very windy that day but again good to see the sites. Our favorite was Weeping Rock but we didn't get a picture of it.

Bryce Canyon

We went to Southern Utah for Spring break and unfortunately it was very cold but we still managed to have a good time. We first of all stopped at Bryce Canyon. There really is some amazing scenery there.

New QSL Card

I have been working on getting back into my amateur radio hobby again. The CW bug has hit and with that, the need for new QSL cards. After searching through many cards, I finally found one that fit the bill. They even allowed me to put my department's patch logo on it!

Now to see if I can get a signal out with my QRP rig...

Paramedic School

Here we go again. Just when I thought it would be a great time to give school a rest another opportunity has popped up. The department received the ability to give scholarships to the volunteer fighters which will in turn, help with our retention and training issues. With this scholarship, there were several that enrolled in the paramedic program at Weber State. Because so many signed up, we have the ability to have the class in our station using the state's Polycom system. So I jump on board. After finishing prereqs. these next two semesters, I will be accepted into the program that starts next fall. We will be done December of 2011. A couple of classes more after that, and I will have another associates degree. Going to be an interesting couple of years.

After which, if two of us that are paramedic are on duty, we will be running as a paramedic rescue instead of an ambulance. If everyone who has signed up completes the course, that will give our department 9 paramedics out of 20 CCEMS personnel.

Then, I will be able to walk on water.....

Mother's 80th Birthday

My Mother, Lucy Auger Porter, turned 80 years old on Saturday. A lot of my family was able to get together on Friday evening to celebrate with her. It was fun to get together and enjoy each other's company but mostly great to pay tribute to such a wonderful woman. She has been such a great example to me all my life and I owe so much to her.

My baby is growing up so fast. She is officially crawling now. She is 9 1/2 months old. She also sports 2 bottom teeth and is working on the top. She is such a good baby and we all love her so much.
